We're Back!
by Jim Mock <[email protected]>
Well, it sure has been a while since I wrote my last editorial, though I
must say, it's good to be back. As many of you who visit(ed) the site
regularly already know, it's been 7 months since our last issue. A lot of
things have happened during that 7 months, and now, with a big thanks to
Joel Sutton and the rest of
VicFUG, we're back and
hope to be better than ever.
With our return, a few things have changed. Some of the more noteworthy
items are:
- Split editorialship. Joel and I will be co-editors, splitting up
duties much like Chris Coleman and Brett Taylor over at Daemon News do. This should give us
both enough time to do the other things we have going on in our lives (such
as our real jobs) and handle the running of the 'zine. This is a good
thing :-)
- No more mirrors. We've decided to do away with the mirror sites for
two main reasons. First, the site is now using PHP. This makes it
harder for sites to mirror us if they're not running PHP. Secondly,
we now have dynamic content (the news) which would make it difficult
to keep the content up-to-date with the main site. Sure it could be
mirrored once a day, but by that time, visitors will have just visited
the main site anyway.
- A set number of features. In the past, we had problems with coming up
with articles since we'd publish everything we had received between
new issues. Some months, this meant 10 or 15 articles.. others it
meant 3. For that reason, we've decided to put a cap of a maximum of
6 features per issue. Additional articles that we receive will be
carried over to the next issue.
- An all-new “Departments” section. This includes a user
group calendar, a company profile, FreeBSD news, and a few other
interesting items. This is definitely worth a look.
Some of you are probably wondering what happened to the articles from
older issues. To sum it up, we decided to start clean, mainly because a
lot of the information in the older articles was outdated. If you're
interested in rewriting an older article to bring it up-to-date, by all
means do so, and send it to [email protected].
Once again, I'd like to thank all of the VicFUG members who were the main
reason for the 'zine returning, and all of our other authors,
proofreaders, and contributors. I look forward to working with all of you
on future issues.
